Course Description

Children with sensory processing challenges typically experience difficulties with how their bodies move. When supporting the development of motor function, movement analysis, biomechanics and kinesiology are helpful layers of understanding that enhance clinical reasoning and intervention. Observing compensatory movements and creating environments and activities to enhance motor control will be the focus of this learning experience. This two-day session will combine lecture, video demos, analysis practicums and handling labs.

Course Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

1. Summarize kinesiological concepts and movement analysis as they apply to individuals with sensory processing challenges.

2. Analyze postural alignment and movement challenges.

3. Summarize the components and importance of postural control.

4. Practice hands-on techniques to support the development of postural control.

5. Determine the appropriateness of motor interventions within sensory treatments.

6. Practice developing environmental and play schemes to support motor skills.

Day 1

9:35 – 11:00 am:  Concepts of kinesiology and movement analysis (lecture)

11:00 – 11:15 am: Morning Break

​

11:15 – 12:45 pm:  Assessment of postural alignment (demonstration and lab)

​

12:45 – 1:15 pm: Lunch

​

1:15 pm – 2:45 pm: Postural control lecture and video demo analysis

​

2:45 – 3:00 pm: Afternoon Break

​

3:00 – 4:30pm: Postural control handling lab

Day 2

11:15 – 12:45 pm: Combining handling labs with sensory interventions

12:45 – 1:15 pm: Lunch

1:15 pm – 2:30 pm: Assessment of dynamic movement during sensory interventions (lecture and video analysis)

2:30 – 3:00 pm: Afternoon Break

​

3:00 – 4:30 pm: Setting up the Environment and Play to Enhance Motor Outcomes

Instructional Methods

The speaker will be using a lecture with slides, video case studies, experiential labs, large/small group discussion, and time allotted for question & answer.

​

Lab Materials

Participants should bring a yoga mat or towel to the course.

​

Course Requirements

In order to qualify for AOTA CEUs, you must attend at least 3 hours of the course (for partial credit), meet at least 2 of the objectives for the course and sign in and out on the sheets provided documenting your attendance at the course. After completing a self-evaluation, you will be emailed a course certificate within one week of the event.
